Our Philosophy

Thank you for your interest in our clinic. Our new medical clinic in Los Angeles is located within minutes of LAX (Los Angeles Airport). It is operated by an endocrinologist and staff who care for their patients, both medically and emotionally, at the highest and most sophisticated level. This means treating people instead of labels. And it means realizing that the strains, the joys and the heartbreak special to the transsexual process deserve a kind and careful approach.

We treat the total person, in mind, brain and body, and we design a special program to meet the needs of each individual. The modern ways in which we modify our patient's hormones allow us to be highly effective without sacrificing safety. We do not allow the label of transsexuality to get in the way of seeing the total person, someone who often has other medical concerns as well. We specialize in the hormones of the adrenal and sexual glands, and are eminently qualified not only to treat transsexuals, but also to lead the way in Gender Modification. We see transsexuals from all over the Americas, as well as from Europe and Asia. Why do they come to see us? Because we do not judge them or disapprove of them, because we refuse to pigeonhole patients, or treat them in a cookbook manner and because our methods have destroyed the myth that more effectiveness means more risk.

Beauty in a Bottle

With most drugs, the stronger the drug, the more risky. This isn't true with estrogen. The way toward making estrogen safer is not by watering it down but by mimicking the way nature uses it. In the young woman the principal estrogen is estradiol, and it enters the body directly from the ovaries, never touching the mouth or stomach. That's why so many young women are slim and healthy, and that's where we come in. Our endocrinologist believes that traditional horse estrogens taken by mouth are the worst way to treat either the transsexual or the menopause. He does his best to mimic the natural situation in the young woman, by using human estrogens and administering them in ways other than by mouth.

We deliver human estrogens at our clinic in a variety of ways that make them extremely safe, even at the high doses taken by the transsexual. Our hormones range from long-acting pellets that last for months on end, and require only occasional visits to our clinic, to shots, patches and gels. Our methods deliberately bypass the liver, the organ that produces our clotting factors and normally rids the body of estrogen. Side-stepping the liver allows us to reduce the risk of clotting while avoiding the liver's tendency to weaken estrogen's cosmetic and emotional benefits.

In our experience, estrogen pellets are the best way to go, because of their smooth and steady release, whereas estrogen injections tend to generate more of a roller-coaster effect. For a truly powerful impact we use pellets plus shots together, and some patients also take progesterone and male hormone blockers. Cost wise, the estrogen pellets are comparable to more old-fashioned, traditional forms of treatment, and as one of our Patients said,

"1 fly by, drop in for my hormones, and then go home and forget about it for four or five months".

The Two Important Things We Refuse to Do

We feel that there are two things we cannot do, relevant to the transsexual;

  • We do not know what being a transsexual really is, and will not be drawn into simplistic labels. We recognize the uniqueness of each individual, and appreciate that the world is not black or white.
  • There is no identifying mark, no magic blood test, that points to a transsexual, the way, for example, a blood sugar level points to diabetes. We certainly cannot identify a transsexual, and we believe that the only people who can are the persons themselves. It is our goal to medically support your careful and thought-out decision.

It doesn't matter where you live, three to four visits a year will provide you with all the hormones you need for a complete transition. Our staff will gladly give you any information you need about costs, hotels and transportation. Several hotels close to LAX have offered low corporate rates and free transport to and from the airport especially for our patients. Obviously, confidentiality is important and like any other patient, you deserve respect. Please allow for the time-zone differences when calling.

When you call our number we will make arrangements for you to come and receive your own individualized analysis and start into your hormone plan, expediting your transformation in accordance with your desires.

Each of us has our critical bridges to cross in life. When you feel ready to cross this bridge, call the Hamilton Center-and we will be there for you.
